I don't know much about building computers, yet, so thanks for reading this. I need a computer that can push four monitors. I use Linux which complicates things. Choosing the graphics card seems to be the hardest part for me. I'd like to get a graphics card that is either supported on Linux by the manufacturer with proprietary drivers or one that is supported with open source drivers. Whichever is fine, I just want it to work. Eyefinity support would be great too, I have 3 1920x1200 monitors in portrait mode so I'd like to run them all as one display when I watch movies (this way I can watch 4K content).
Budget. How much are you willing to spend?
$750. Spending less would be nice. I will spend more than $750 if need be.
Where do you live (what country), and what currency do you use?
United States. I live in a big city so I also have plenty of physical stores near by (microcenter, best buy, etc.)

Web browsing, photoshop, watching video (not editing video), and programming. I don't game so I won't need as powerful of a computer. I really need something that can push all 4 monitors while Web browsing, photoshop, watching video, and programming at the same time.

Overclocking isn't a priority for me. If the CPU and graphics cards can be overclocked then I will if cooling isn't a problem.

No. I use Ubuntu, Debian, and Arch. I will also be installing Windows 7 Home Premium with a license key I have.

Yes! If cooling isn't a problem I certainly will be mining bitcoin or litecoin.
Do you render movies or photshop pictures?
I edit photos with GIMP but I may move to Abode Photoshop. I don't edit much video. If there are any parts that you must have, and you don't want to be swayed against, such as a particular graphics card cooler, or a certain SSD, case, etc., then please specify that.
I'd like to get a 128gb SSD. I don't need any additonal storage. I'd like to get 8gb of FAST ddr3 ram. 3 of my monitors have displayport which helps for picking a graphics card! I want the motherboard to have USB 3.0. Front or back ports is fine with me. I'd like to get a Fractal Design case. Cheaper black minimal cases work for me as well.

When I first started mining just over a year ago, it was suggestion by the same user that got me into mining on Ncix.com that I get a wallet at QuadrigaCX and use that as my nicehash address for mining, I have since then moved on to Sniffdog Miner but the same process applies pretty much which is entering in the btc wallet address I want my btc payouts from the pools to go to. Since mining for over a year I've accumulated a decent amount of bitcoin as well as a bit of litecoin and bitcoin cash. So it has been brought to my attention that keeping my coins in a Quadrigacx wallet is the same as leaving it on the exchange correct? I've only been using QuadrigaCX as a wallet and that is neither correct not safe? So if I'm planning on holding my coins for a few years I probably shouldn't be keeping it in my QuadrigaCX wallet and transfer it to a blockchain wallet or something similar right? The user from Ncix was probably suggesting what he did, thinking it was for constantly cashing out the profits? Which I don't intend on doing for a few years. Edit: oh and if using a different wallet is suggested, when it does come time to cashing out and I have to send the btc back to QuadrigaCX, I'm guessing there're fees involved?

Greetings Cmdr's of the elite dangerous community, As some of you may be aware my family and I were victims of a house fire this last September 18th. I wanted to offer an update on the situation from beginning to current to give everyone an update, thank them for what they have done for my family and, I and lay a few rumors to rest. Since then it has been a tremendous 3 month long journey of emotions, suffering, and generosity. Its been a roller coaster to say the least. There was the initial shock of experiencing it all and loosing everything we owned, I spent a day in hospital for carbon monoxide exposure. Everything was uncertain for us it wasn't great. There have been two things that have helped me get through this series of events, the First is the woman I love so much I have become engaged to, the second has been this community of players along with my Black Lance Mercenaries. Not long after the fire a friend of mine I met through Elite Dangerous Who I became good friends and now know IRL saw what I was going through and decided he wanted to put his online personality to use and start a fundraiser for my wife and I to assist in anyway he could with the endeavor. This was not something I asked him for and the idea of it had my fiance and I in tears from the idea of such generosity, as our friend also knew I had just recently lost work in August (Ncix my former employer also just filed for bankruptcy December 1st a few days ago) and burned through all my savings with veterinary hospital bills this last February when our dog became ill. What followed was the greatest collective act of generosity I have ever received from a community of acquaintances than I have ever received before in my life. His stream and the generosity of this community raised us 2400$ Canadian. This gesture was beyond the generosity my fiance and I could have imagined. Elite Dangerous community thank you you helped a man and his future wife get through an incredibly tough time. The money helped My fiance and I actually live, help me look for work and try and resemble even the slightest bit of normal life. The money was used to purchase clothes, bedding, Prescription medications our "Canadian health care" didn't cover, toiletries, toothbrushes, put a repair into our 2003 Hyundai SUV that could of got me pulled over especially with all the extra driving living out of our car at first. Clothing, haircut and a shaver for myself to look for work, resumes being printed and fuel and parking going to all the interviews.(I found a part time job 2 weeks ago BTW) and another bloody vet bill. When you loose every essential in your life and are unemployed and have to replace every essential you need the 2400$ got us through about the first month And I Honestly couldn't be more thankful because I have no idea how we would have gotten through without you guys. About another month since then has passed and we have had a few updates. We were finally able to put forward an insurance claim after close to a month of issues with the claim contents. The house has started a slow rebuild the entire thing was stripped down to the inner studs to be odor sealed. and is only finishing getting dry wall up. still need floors on all floors and refinishing of the kitchen (cabinets and such) and are only finding out now we still will not be in our home for Christmas until likely the new year. The next event was our insurance claim has gone through, and were approved for our claim, I also want everyone to know we didn't place any claims for items we replaced with money raised through the community fundraiser as we felt that wasn't fair to our insurance or the community of people who helped us out we weren't in this to benefit from anything but only have our old life back. I actually used tons of the advise several people sent me personal messages about on how to handle insurance claims and inventory and price our possessions to minimize our loses this alone was incredible help. I have since repurchased and assembled a computer I am unbelievably happy to have again, due to the price of hardware inflation from bitcoin miners on mid to high mid range components and some good black Friday sales I was able to afford a few upgrades that more or less equate to the stuff just being newer than my old 4770k system. I have forgone some of the things I had as well to make better purchasing decisions this time around. With a new computer and the ability to return to playing with a community that has supported me and been there for me so much these last 3 months makes this week one of the most exciting moments its been all year for me. I had heard that a few people had questions about what was going on and understandably so as I have been super up and down with my emotions and I wanted to set some facts straight for everyone, so thanks for taking the time to read. I don't intend for it to be servecluster quality, but rather a strong desktop computer (duel Windows/Linux boot) that can run some relatively small, computationally expensive simulations and software in a reasonable amount of time, before larger projects/assignments are created for running on a computing cluster. My main concerns are reducing bottleneck - I want to be able to run both CPU and GPU-intensive software in a balanced way, meaning I'm not skimping on the GPU for a better CPU and vice versa. I realize it could be difficult to compare Some specific questions I have: 1) According to Intel's site, the max RAM speed supported by the i7-7700k is DDR4-2400. How does one use RAM with a higher speed? Do you need a Xeon processor? Also, I'm looking at 32 GB RAM. 2) For my purpose, should I definitely get a Z270? I read somewhere that it has a better memory controller than the Z170, but not sure about this. 3) How does the 1080 compare to 2x 1070? Or a 1080 Ti? For CUDA and for cryptocurrencies? I have a MasterLiquid Maker 92 AIO cooler (which, I've checked, is correctly installed) which I thought would be a nice upgrade over the stock cooler. [Build Ready] Never built a PC, looking for advice
After asking on some other forums and looking at various articles, I have picked out a tentative parts list. I figured I would ask for some second opinions from a different forum before I started the actual shopping. Some things to note; Budget: My original budget was 800-1200 USD -- this includes OS/peripherals/monitoaccessories and maybe a chair if I have the money leftover for it. I already have a Samsung LCD TV for big picture stuff. I thought this was a good range for the performance that I want (though I could be wrong). It looks like I'm going to be over after the aforementioned extras, but I'm not that fussed since my TF2 pack is basically paying for everything. I'm not overclocking (don't need it), but I did pick some overclock-ready parts since they weren't that much more expensive. This is going to be my only computer for a while, and I was advised that overclocking later can increase PC lifespan Purpose: gaming, with some movies and light schoolwork (typing etc.). I'm not going to be rendering video, streaming, or any other intensive activities. I also heard bitcoin mining was no longer profitable due to electricity costs. Benchmark games: Titanfall, Evil Within, Borderlands; The Pre-Sequel(split screen), Metro: Redux, etc. I'm going to be playing a mix of new and old releases, and I don't need maximum settings or 200 FPS. This is going to be my only computer for a while, however, so the more stuff it can handle, the better. Previous computer building experience: zero (unless you count that one middle school project). I did watch that newegg youtube tutorial and read that one reddit guide, but other than that I'm still pretty new to this. Other notes: Space is not a concern. This is an all-purpose build that I put together slowly over the past year. It started out as just an HTPC, but ballooned into a gaming and bitcoin mining system. What's not listed in pcpartpicker is an additional HD 6850 connected by a PCIe x1 riser for bitcoin mining. The total hashrate of the system is 780 MH/s. Mining has been going full-on for about 4 months now and about a 1/3 of the cost of the current system has been paid for. It probably won't continue at this rate if difficulty goes way up with the asics coming out, but a 1/3 of the cost already is still a lot. The i5-3450 and 7950 are a great combination for gaming. Hello Redditors! I was referred here by a floor mate of mine, she said, 'Reddit is the place to go if you ever need ANYTHING.' She made sure to emphasis the anything part. I recently bought a complete desktop off of a fellow on Craigslist. (The guy I bought it off of is in the United States Army, and he had to literally sell it quick while he was in town. He was being shipped off to California, and was just going to throw it away if he didn't sell it.) He was asking $75.00 for the complete setup, which I thought was decent. I emailed him an offer of $50.00, knowing his hardware was a little dated. After approximately 12 days of going back and forth, I finally was able to meet this guy and complete the exchange. He gave me a monitor, tower, router, mouse, keyboard all for $40.00; he shaved $10.00 off for it being Christmas and all when we met. Here is a little more detail about each of the individual items. The Monitor - It's an eMachines monitor, running 1366x768 with a 60Hz refresh. Great condition. The Tower - It's an eMachines ET1331G-05w Model. This tower is different though, it has 2 HDDs (750GB and 200GB) and a discrete graphics card! (ATI Radeon HD 5450, to be exact.) It's running Windows 7, and I haven't used it for anything besides general web browsing and light BitCoin mining. The Router - It was a brand spanking new NETGEAR N900 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter, and it works great! (I was looking in stores, and it was $60.00 or so brand new!) The Keyboard - I believe it to be the stock eMachines keyboard, nothing special. It has the Volume controller at top, with a sleep button on the right. The Mouse - It's just a Microsoft optical mouse from what I can tell about it. So, for a grand total of $40, I don't believe I did that bad for what I got. Allow me to get back on track with why I posted here... My friend told me that I'd be able to get help here with building a more up-to-date computer. She explained how it's cheaper and I'd get a better computer for my dollar. I saw that there was this part of Reddit -> /buildapcforme - I don't want someone else to build my computer for me. So, instead of going that route, I am going to propose a build and get some feedback on it. I plan on making this the central-hub for just about everything.... Gaming, Movies, Music, Work, etc... First and foremost, this computer is intended to hold me over for the next few years until I am commissioned into the United States Air Force. Here is a list of different things that this computer will be used for:
Goldfarming. Wait! What's that? Well... goldfarming is where you run a "bot" (or macro) to obtain in-game currency. Then, with that in-game currency from the bot, I sell to the general public for good 'ole real-life currency, preferrably USD.

My Gaming Rig is about 5 years old now and still manages 45fps/1080p on ultra for most games, so I know this rig is going to be great for 1080p. My main concern is with the graphics card. I assume everything is so expensive because of bitcoin mining. I was initially trying to get an RX580 for this, but I can't find one near the $200 price point Logical Increments has for it. Even this GTX is a bit pricey. Hoping that the prices will come down in the near future, but it doesn't seem likely. Please let us know if there are any issues with this build or if there are any better options in this price range. Thanks!

I have an E-sata external drive, das keyboard, a Razer Naga mouse, and can probably salvage the dvd drive from the corpse. Have two DVI monitors, one 19201200, one 19201080, and an aging sound system, which could stand to be replaced (stereo + subwoofer)

I recently bought a 2nd 7950 (same exact card) but have yet to put it in my system since i would need a more powerful power supply. My question is, should i sell my 7950's and use the money from that and what i saved by not buying a new power supply to buy a 780? I currently use my computer for a decent amount of gaming on 2 1080p monitors and also do quite a bit of video editing on Adobe Premiere CC (which takes advantage of dual GPU's). I should mention, I also have been considering Bitcoin mining, but do not know anything about it or if it is worth it. Power use is also a concern for me since I will be moving into an apartment not too far into the future where I will have to pay the electricity bill (currently live in a dorm where that is included) and I am kind of tight on money. So should I keep the 7950's and buy a power supply or sell them and get a 780?

Changes: 1) First change I had was i had a corsair tx750 and it was making quite an annoying coil whine. Corsair had very good customer service and accepted my RMA and had a new one back to me shortly. However instead of continuing to use that power supply I picked up the xfx on sale for around $89 down from its much higher regular price. I then sold the corsair to pay for new power supply. 2) Added some case fans. Added 2 blue coolermaster fans because there was a good sale on them. I'm not to focused on CPU overclocking anymore so i stuck them on the CPU cooler for a nice cool effect. Also added a delta fan. IT.IS.LOUD. But that's why you buy it. It creates a massive amount of air flow and i needed that for the summer heat. 3) Added sleeved cable extensions. These things are great! They allowed me to get my cpu power behind the mobo as before a 8 pin connector wouldn't fit around the top, but with the cord having a 4+4 instead, it was able to go through the back. Also allowed me to get the motherboard cable behind tray as the xfx's motherboard cable is very short. They look awesome and improve air flow. 4) Added a second 7950. I wanted to do a little bit of bitcoin mining so I decided to pick up a second card. As the card was running too hot i moved it down a slot. While i no longer have crossfire, temps dropped about 15C. Some advice: If you dont need something right away. Look for a sale! Sales saved me so much money on this build! Im glad i waited for sales instead of buying right away.

Other notes are that I would strongly advise AGAINST using this motherboard, I had to RMA my first one. The replacement was supposed to be revision 2.0 however is 1.0. This is why I purchased the 230mm fan (in hopes of avoiding another fire!) I didn't end up using the SSD as its just an HTPC/miner. It mines roughly 690Khash/s on the 7970; and around 110Khash/s on the APU (mining with Scrypt for Litecoin, not SHA-256 for bitcoin) 7970 hovers around 68-74 Celsius with room temps between 23-28C. No thermostat on VRM's unfortunately. I feel confident this build is complete, no parts to add. I use Filezilla server as a file server as I can access this from anywhere in the world The A10 is at stock speeds as I don't want to push the VRMs on the motherboard and risk another fire. This gives more than enough power for blu-ray decoding, and other HTPC duties. Very happy with this build. If anyone has any questions or comments I'd be glad to hear the feedback. Thanks
